Joseph Airstrip
The Joseph Driving Range is for all intents and purposes an alpine soaring site; albeit those from the Denver area might argue with that definition a bit as it sits at only 4,300 ASL. No matter, it is provides a site for splendid aerotowing, electric-powered airplane flying, hi-start launching, and hand-launched glider flying. It is an informal affair, with pilots generously sharing the airspace as time and conditions allow. This year two tugs were in use hauling a few scale gliders into the clear and vivid blue sky, whereupon the gliders/sailplanes often found lift that carried them to lofty heights. Additionally, hand-launch gliders were seen circling in huge lift that had them flying inverted to de-thermal. Suffice it to say, that the Driving Range is a super sight for flying, especially since the landowner (Mr Mike O’Rouke) generously provides his land, which is mowed and meticulously kept. |
